Welcome!
We are students at John Moores University, Liverpool. That’s Me (Ashley Pedersen) on the left and my colleague Pamela Brodie on the right.
Please feel free to explore and follow the links on the left for information on how you can help!
Pamela and myself are in the final year of our midwifery degree which we both agree has been the most terrifying, challenging and rewarding experience of our very different lives, and promises to continue as such into our qualified careers!
As part of our final year we have been given the opportunity to embark on an elective placement of our choosing. We wanted to make the most of this opportunity, as facilitators of normality to further broaden our knowledge and experience of raw, uncensored childbirth and to provide us with a potentially life changing and memorable experience.
After some research, a visit to the area and many many emails, we have been given permission to visit and observe at a well established clinic, AFRICMED and surrounding tertiary maternity clinics in The Gambia a small country in West Africa. As you can imagine, this is a terrific honour and shall improve our knowledge and experience of pregnancy and birth in a low tech environment greatly.
Two charities in particular stood out for Pamela, and by way of thanks for allowing us to visit and learn from their country we would love to raise money to take with us and donate !

Comment by Traci Hudson March 26, 2009 @ 4:42 pmI found your site after the News item on the LJMU website. I went on a fieldtrip to The Gambia in 2007 as part of my MSc at LJMU. I thought it was an amazing country and intend to go back again soon. The health services we saw were so varied, inspiring and depressing I think it will be amazing for you to work within them.
